I haven't tried it with wood but next time you use charcoal as soon as the coals are lit a tiny bit on the edges hit them with straight oxygen for a minute. No waiting for coals to get hot when you have an oxy/acet rig.

I will try it and I can't believe I never thought of that...not even a little hint of it.

A lot of progress on the oven. My brother from Texas who runs Texas Oven Company and actually knows what he's doing arrived last Friday...so it rained all day. But Saturday we got to work sawing and laying bricks. Day 1 was about 2/3 a dome.

Day 3 was insulate and 1st cost of stucco. At this point it is technically a functional over so there was drinking and my brother headed back to texas the following morning...later than planned as there was quite a lot of drinking the night before. It up to me to finish it.

It turns out making round things from rectangles is a bigger and puffy insulation makes it all worse so stucco coat 2 was about evening out and rounding out the done and chimney. I planned 2 hours so it took 4 and I was working under the lights at 10pm...but I got it pretty straight.

Day 5 I took 1/2 day off work now that I know its 4 hours not 2 and touched up a couple places on the dome to get it a bit more symmetrical looking, put a 1st coat on the base and added a layer of fiberglass mesh to the dome....I did not enjoy the experience of working with thinset in this way and it's still on my hands after hand washes and 2 showers.

.....then it rained so I had the scramble to cover the still wet cement. The over with all the insulation and stucco on the dome came out an inch or inch and a 1/2 per side bigger than I planned so I need to stucco up the base to match...that means a couple extra coats.

I think it's looking pretty good though. This is the first one my bother has done with a chimney like this. We hadn't really planned exactly what it was going to be and talking about options we settled on just building it from fire bricks since we had them and didn't have any of the other things we were talking about. .I think it looks pretty good though even if it's a pain in the but yo finish.
