It was dark this morning but not raining so I snapped a couple picks of last Saturday's work. The dome with the insulation came out a little bigger than expected and over hung the base by 1.5-2" per side. That means I need to build up the base with mortar before I can finish stucco anything.....no way to do that in 1 coat. I have 2 coats on and it looks like #3 will get me close enough.

I did 1 coat Friday and beat the rain then Saturday rushed home after soccer to try to get coat 2 done during a break in the rain ....this time i was not so lucky and the rain started just about the time i was towlingvon the last of the mortar and i still had to sponge it smooth so about 15-20 minutes of light rainbefore i could get plastic on.....a little damage but not bad considering.

Not sure when there will be another break in the rain for for 3 then its finish work and there can't even be rain in the forecast for at least 24 hours for that work. The whole island needs a new top coat, the new walls need a brown and top coat....and it suspect Lana will require all the retaining walls to get a fresh top coat so they match....if I had to guess

Got home late last night but had just barely enough time to mix some mud and out it on. The last 2 coats I put 2 batches on, tonight I only had time for 1 batch... but also I'm getting closer so thick here, none there kind of thing and needing to check it to know which is which slows me down a lot. Probably 1 more rough coat before I'm ready to smoother coat the whole thing. After I finished, I went in and showed, had a late dinner, realized I left my phone and speaker outside so I grabbed them...shit it's raining again! Cover it up. Lots of rain......

I still need to put a shelf on the front and I learned yesterday the final design in not complete. I thought it was a simple stucco finish, but maybe leave the hearth bricks exposed.....now there is talk of trim or stucco more or the brick or cut some of the travertine paver stones and face the hearth opening with that, maybe the same on the woodbow below.....I can't build what's not designed......

If this is of any interest I'm not using plain mortar for any of this work. The stucco up on the dome is:
1 80lb mortar mix
1cu vermiculite
Some portland... like about a shovel
1/2 bag midgrade ($15/bag) thinset

This is over the 2"of insulation which we didn't want to crush and the vermiculite makes the mix about 1/2 normal mortar weight. The extra Portland is to stick the vermiculite together as bag mixes only have what's needs to stick the stuff in the bag, the thinset makes it sticky. The dome gone 2 layers of this.

Next on the dome was the fiberglass mesh stuck this high grade ($25/bag) thinset. That stuff is STITCKY! and sticks the mesh right down.....I'm pretty sure it's also mostly waterproof, it just loaded with latex and looks and feels more like plastic than cement when its dry. Knocking on the dome it sounds hollow....there is about about an inch of masonry over that insulation but its low density....unexpected sound the first time I knocked on it

The stuff I'm using now is
180lb mortar mix
1/4 bag midgrade thinset
1/3 gallon bonding agent

The first 2 were my brother's mixed, this one is mine.....I love stuff that comes in a bottle, he prefers bags and using more thinset or a higher grade would probably give a similar result....but this stuff is nice to work with. It sticks and stays on spreads smoothly without cracking like straight mortar does when you push it about.

In the smooth coat I'll use a full gallon of the latex stuff to make it more water resistant and to be sure it sticks to the thinset on the dome which is pretty smooth....the thinset didn't really hold the sponge texture and self leveled to that smooth plasticky finish.

I think the base is straight enough now. Last night I got home early enough to do some work before little imes soccer practice (I'm coaching so I need to go). I went round with the level, marked the bad spots, then filled them up and rechecked.. .I don't think it's out more than 1/4" and that is plenty good enough for me. I had a little mud left so I also brown coated the wood box area.

Note to self - freeforming a couple inches of stucco is a bigger and best avoided.

I'm going to need a final decision from Lana on how she wants me to finish the front so I know if I need to reshape anything to blend in with it.. ..its raining today so hopefully we can pull together a plan for Saturday morning.

I had at the bricks on top with a grinder and sander tonight...I kind of look at how it turned out. We were thinking we'd stucco the brick on the front and top....or maybe face the front with travertine ...buy I like the brick, lana is undecided.

So I got outside about 8-8:30, found a piece of travertine for the shelf, cut it to length, played out a radius and width I thought would look good and about 9-9:15 called Lana out for an approval.......around 6pm after a bit of....discussion, it looks like this:

One last base coat to makes the texture and color more even to be sure the finish coat comes out uniform color.

Yesterday was stucco top coat day!

It started out just before 7am eith all smiles....and ended a bit after 7pm with really sort hands. I don't know what they put in the stucco I bought but it literally dissolved my skin

I also learned some important lessons about stucco color being completely dependent on moisture......the oven turned white as it dried so I had to do it a second time. The best I can figure the problem was the base...i loaded it up with latex modifier to make it basically waterproof to keep the insulation dry....so it didn't suck any water out of the top coat....white and Lana freaked and I lost about 4 hours and 2 $50 bags of stucco.

The texture on the rest of the island also became a point of contention....ending with me scraping it of and redoing it. So the day ended with the oven and the front side of the island finished and my hands really hurting....I have about a dozen bandaid on them this morning.

This means the oven itself is DONE!....other than a top cap....which remains TBD.

So when is the inaugural baking of the first pizza?

I have a file with about 8 different dough recipes you're welcome to, although they are tailored to high altitude (5000'). Some are simple, and some are as complex as your mortar mixes.
