So I've kind of settled on the theme of the build to be a century or parts. 20s body, 40s engine, 60s space frame and just keep lookikng of bits to blend in.

Engine wise the thought that's been percolating is something like a modern V8 intake, runners wrapping around a center plenum but injectors to the inside. rough concept wise like this:

Then side mount the blower or use a small turbo or 2, have an intercooler maybe, all the modern convinces.

This is all going to come down to a packaging exercise mostly I guess. The body I'd like to use, mostly because its dirt cheap, has an engine bay like 29"w x 24"T then the radiator shell in front is maybe 20"w? The engine is about 18" wide so what little space there is goes quick. I need to assemble a pile of parts and the viable options will probably be more clear

Are you building your own frame or getting a kit frame and then stretching it to fit your needs?

It will be something I build and dangerously light. Years ago I had a speedster kit car and laid out a frame for a mid-engine conversion that was basically 2 of the FSAE formula car frames I built siamesed together. I modeled it and FEA'd it but decided not to built it....fast forward to this project and I'm thinking the same thing, but with the engine in front. This means no working doors and tube running all through the passenger compartment and everywhere else of course which is why I decided not to build it in the first place, but that was then

You should look at what the Pro Mod type drag car chassis is like. They use dual rails front to back now through the middle of the car. It is very effective way to make a very strong back bone with room around it. Even older cars are being retrofitted with dual rails. The rails run front to back in a continuous ladder frame and everything comes off of that. If I build a new dune buggy frame, I will use a variation of this. Although, I don't think my dune buggy needs to harness enough power to make a difference. But a ProMod with 4-5K HP needs it.

File comment: This is a Jerry Bickel Race car. You can see how the middle frame ladder section is done.

Once I collect up the major part we'll see what is possible. For sure it will vaguely resemble that but do want to make it corner more thsan drag race as I won't have drag race hp :(

I decide to see how much it really weights. The heads and crank were upstairs in the shop, in a corner semi buried.  I was remembering the crank was heavy....but i wasn't remembering THAT heavy.

Block+cam/valves+waterpumps - 240lb

Aluminum heads = 38lb

Crank+damper(because its stuck on) =98.5lb

so 377, add the pistons and rods maybe 400? Add a custom intake and headers...$450?  Then clutch and  flywheel 500?  Not as bad as I thought and honestly better than I'd hoped...other than the 100lb crank.

I think the plan is to plan the engine but not build the engine and move on to the car.  The engine needs 2-3 year worth of money and so does the rest of the car....so no point in building an engine and letting it rust or risk damaging anything in the car fab process.  Then once I have a roller, time to built a runner.

I just asked and they say the body is 46lb.

Basic plan then

Engine -500lb

Trans (944?) - 150

rolling frame - 350 (100 frame, 150 wheels, 100 suspension

Body - 100

Other - 200

so 1300-1500lbs maybe?  that would be ok.

Does Other include the fuel tank?
Steering wheel? Seats?

I think both your suspension weight and your Other weight are significantly low. It's tough to get unsprung weight per corner with a realistically sized wheel & tire much less than 100 lbs. That's knuckle, CV joint, brakes, control arms, wheel & tire

Maybe, but I rounded up in other places and added 200....this is a nothing build, a proper car this will not be. The seat, if I use seat and not build them into the frame will be ...15lbs each? The steering column will be a piece of 1" tubing and its small, light, and for low speed so not much needed for brakes, I'll probably look to the dune buggy world or similar. The FSAE car was pretty porky at 520lbs with full tank of gas, this is bigger so double it and add 500 for the engine and we're back to 1500. Worst that happens is I'm way off and it comes in closer to 2k...but now I have a reason to make sure that doesn't happen ;)

My dune buggy is 1280 lbs. So its possible to get 1600-1800 with a much heavier engine. If you use 4130 tubing it will be much lighter as well. I think chassis first is a great idea. Look forward to more plans. Drawings maybe?
