There are cheap "endoscopes" on the market that plug into your cell phone. I have one that includes a 90 degree mirror head that would let you watch valves through a spark plug hole.
However, as long as you can verify that the cam timing is actually good this time...
From my viewpoint, it looks like conflating hope with a course of action has bitten you historically...
Fantastic to see it coming back together!
I have one, I bought it to see what was wrong the last time...just not sure how to use in for this project.
Best I can tell the only time there was an issue with cam timing is when I was claying the pistons and couldn't set it properly. In hindsight the only way to clay these is to use the software or a dial indicator to confirm TCD lift then pistons in, clay on, crank to TDC, head on minus the valve springs, open the valve with a dial indicator or caliper, head off , see what you have. Once I turned it with the cams any damage that was going to be done was done. It was a bad idea leaving hope leaving hope all is well or full disassembly to see if all is well as the options and since the damage if there is any is already done I chose to believe Santa is bringing me a running engine for Christmas so press on.
