There are plenty of high compressive strength insulation materials (Armatec e.g.) which will easily carry a pool table. I once bought a house which had a really nice beech wood floor on top of underfloor heating which wasn‘t glued down but just laid on. The basement underneath was REALLY cozy if you wanted some heat in the living room, Ceiling was at 40 deg Celsius. You‘ll waste a lot of energy if this is wrong. Be that as it may, I am starting to suspect Lana doesn‘t exist and you just rather dabble on the house than the engine :-)...

I guess another way to look at it is I know exactly where the pool table is going so there is no reason I couldn't make that specific area stronger.

Yesterday in the middle of a discussion about where the fridge should go (after I'd already finished framing a place for it which was the last framing as it was delayed wait on a location decision which I'd been given the day before, and was ready to solder in the waterline) I got hit with a request to put the basement on its own air-handler..wait what? We talked about this and how the basement mostly only needs heat which will mostly come from the floor and we'd use a zoning system of the 1st floor unit for any AC and extra heat in the winter and that is how we justified the cost of the floor heat...remember.....yes Love, I'll find a place for another air-handler and figure out some way to re-plumb the geo field stuff to connect it......but i don't see how I can fit that and take another 6ft out of the storage/mechanical room for the pantry you're asking for today.......yes Love, it possible at least in theory.....

Got the radon system running last night and it pulling about 1.5" WC...that SEEMS good I guess. The blower and piping is probably bigger than actually needed but I figured better to be sure so I can do it once and move on. Its supposed to run at least 24 hours before starting the new radon test which is min 48 hours, then 5-7 days for results....hopefully I don't need to revisit this.

Look into putting in some mini splits instead. Much easier, extremely quiet, you can flush mount the air handlers in the ceiling or walls. In floor heating is nice but slow. You'll either have to leave it on all the time or plan a many hours in advance before you go downstairs. The nicer the flooring you put in the less efficient the infloor heating and the more you'll be heating the dirt underneath the slab. The mini splits will give you quick, cheap on demand heating and AC when you need it and you can control it remote.

Your going to have to have AC vents anyway so its not like you can get away with that. With the mini spits you won't have to worry about where to locate another air handler. Block off the duct work, put in the mini splits and be done with it.

If you go with the in floor they you'll want to not put down rugs and padding or anything else that will insulate the floors and you will lose the comfort you were looking for. Save the in floor heat for the garage where it really makes a difference. Not like people are going to be standing in your basement for long periods of time. Mostly sitting. Put a plush rug with thick padding around the pool table. You won't want the cue ball hitting tile floors anyway.

Kevin, Kevin, Kevin.....there's no logic involved in any of this. The discussion a couple days ago was about how to keep the floor at the temp Lana's imagining there is a good chance a lot of the time we'll be running the floor heat to make the floor feel water AND running the AC at the same time to make the air temp right. :?:   ....I've already resigned myself to that becoming reality.

We also talked about how echoey the space has become with hard walls, ceiling and floor and how that is BAD for the theater and generally annoying but that doesn't impact the tile talk in any way...because tile is forever and we won't need to worry about kids going from the pool to the basement. On one hand we say its just the basement then immediately on the other its part of the house.....so there is no clear plan and no way to make the required compromises anywhere in the design....one space is the ping-pong-poker table-gym-"wouldn't a fire place be nice here" room as I understand it, clearly that's impossible in a 17x14 space so I guess whatever gets setup first wins? don't know.

....a few more days of mud work, then a coat of primer and it will be drop-death time for the floor decision or progress stops next week.

So I finished the primer yesterday and  last night I was doing a little picking up, putting in some outlets in the walls, cleaned some stuff up in the breaker box....and just looking it occurred to me that I'm really not sure the remodel has in anyway made the space more attractive....at least to me :)
