I measured the main bearing clearance with the bore gauge and got about 2.0 on the tightest and 2.4 on the loosest. The original goal was to target 2.1 so that seemed like a win to me....but I was having trouble believing anything went right so I pulled out the plastigauge and it said they were all like 1.8-1.9, close but different.

I've read plastigauge will often give a smaller reading by a couple tenths but I don't think 1.8 or 2.4 are a bad numbers either way so crank installed

It was a very expensive $3.48 pipe.....but I'm told look how much we saved!...hmmmmmmm

edit: it looks like we'll be saving even more as all Lowes within a 30mile radius are being scouted for sale pricing. No doubt they will look nice but this many usually means I will be doing the digging.

Save the receipt if you bought them from Lowes or Depot. They have a price guarantee for something like 30 or 60 days. Next month they will discount the plants even more and you walk in with the receipt and they credit you the difference.

I'm just going to ignore the attempts to keep me on landscaping ;)

got the heads back off in record time, just 45 minutes! I hate those nuts under the cams....

Thought I would install the oil tubes with the new o-rings...wrong o-rings. I'll order more tomorrow. I ordered red wrinkly paint today so redhead it will be.

Pulled the pistons out and realized what I deal I got...3 stickers, 2 beer koozies and a pen! Wow!

Then pulled out and assembled the pistons and rods which should go in tomorrow

While doing the rings I noticed they must have had people do it wrong a couple times...quite a warning

Recall I decided to use gapless rings to help with vacuum and compression at low speed because the ring gaps are larger than I had planned, but nitrous safe so not all bad. for those that have never seen gapless rings, they aren't actually gapless, they put 2 rings in 1 groove with the gaps 180 degrees to each other and the oil film seals them together.

3.5 hr total today

Very nice progress. The compound is a pain to clean up. I usually use a little scotch brite to finish off the bores. It looks great. I always trust measurements and not plastigage. It looks like the clearances are really good. I am excited for the build to be running in the not so distant future.

Yes, the current official projects require dust free dry time and haven't left me physically exhausted everyday which opens up some car time making me believe that Santa may bring me a running Ferrari for Christmas this year.

After 3 or 4 tries I got the finish on the theater cabinet accepted Saturday morning but its oil base so still in the shop to de-gas

Railings got built Sat afternoon & Sunday, sanded and stained yesterday, tries to get the right color and still a few areas the stain was rejected so I'm working on that, then 3 days to dry before the poly can go on the bottom, then I think install and poly the other 3 sides

In the meantime there is a request for another coat on the stairs that I want to get done before the spindles go in so knock that out while the stain is drying on the railings....while hoping to keep up the progress on the engine if possible because Christmas is coming.

Congrats on getting progress done!

Line2Line probably sent you all the swag because they almost never get 12 pistons at a shot. You helped somebody fill their quota this month! :D

I was starting to get awfully jealous of your progress pics or engine stuff while mine were of a basement

I'm still pretty jealous of the pics of an engine stand that appear to have a crank to rotate the engine vs the brute force mine requires...with just a block on my stand its fine but Id kind of forgotten how heavy this thing is once the parts start going on :o

Yesterday I told Lana she needs to start thinking of stocking stuffers that people with running Ferraris would like....yeah, she chuckled as she left....but this just has to be the time it finally works, it just has to. My older son has been popping out to see the progress and said he will help with the piston install so at least there is that.

What piston ring compressor do you have?

I've used one of these in the past:

But never again...
I upgraded to this:

And I will NEVER go back. The piston funnel just makes it SOOOOOOO much easier with SOOOOOO much less risk of damaging a ring.

You are the second person to suggest a funnel in the past 8 hours....and had you suggested it 2 days ago I'd have one, but today is piston day and what I have is the same band clamp I've had for I guess 40 + years, I used to use it on my minibike engine....and you'r right, it makes installing pistons a suck job every time but it will be done today rather than take a 2-3 day delay for what is clearly a WAY nicer tool, but if there is ever a next time, now I know.

To be fair, you have a "conventional" engine in that you can install the main caps before the pistons... So you can have the block upright and gravity helps you install the pistons.
When the Northstar lower crankcase in installed, one bolt on every rod is inaccessible with a stretch gauge. This means I have to install the pistons and stretch the rod bolts BEFORE I install the lower crankcase. This means that the block has to be upside down with the crank just sitting there... and installing pistons in an upside down block blows.

I should have thought of the funnel earlier, since you've been talking about pistons for a few days now.
