Duct work sucks I've decided. The first run is almost done though and I'm not giving up even an 1/8" of ceiling height I don't need to give up. Hopefully not more than 2 weeks.....

My plan to save height is making the job hard and the HVAC supply house made it harder saving me money. I had spec'd 5 foot sections....not really thinking but it's what homedepot stocks and my plan was screw the duct ro the top joints from the inside so no hangers below. The supply house told me they could get me 8ft sections, so cheaper and less to assemble which sounded great....but they are pretty heavy and awkward for 1 person and too long to just screw at the ends as I planned so I'm putting up the top piece and screwing in place, then fighting to snap the bottom on....5ft sections next time...

It seems to be working though. The 1 run is almost done and I have 2 x 8.375 screwed up along side, this will hold the drywall tight to the bottom of the ducts...at least in theory, and I'll have clean ducts and 3.5" more ceiling height than if I left the old and drywalled under it.....but ductwork sucks.

I do not enjoy duct work......and it seems to take forever, at least the way I'm doing it. you can kind of see int he last pic I posted there are no hangers below the duct taking ceiling height. I did that taking the first 1/2 and screwing it to the joists then putting the bottom 1/2 on, then calk joist to duct so nothing cn rattle....which it turns out is the hardest possible way to install these things. The 1st floor system is done though and started on the 2nd floor tonight...4 more days maybe and I'm back to where I started with the basement left to do, which has to be another week? ...and I really should have started with the basement run as there is next to no room to work on it now which will only make it that much more of a suck job.

Chris! How are things going?...I hope your pizza empire is holding up with all that's going on?

We've not used our pizza oven since last fall....no real point when its just us, the pizza cooks fine in the electric oven so the wood oven is more about it being an event. Our country is going "green" Friday but there is still little chance any social gatherings will be permitted in my world.....and honestly I have to wonder a bit....Covid hasn't gone anywhere its just down to a number that lets it float around not quite bad enough to shut down but ready to jump should we forget its there....what do you even do with that? The northeast is basically stable....we're at 500 cases/day here in PA, mostly the eastern counties including the one I live in and the one I work in so Lana isn't having any talk of normal life but to get to my point, we've not been to a restaurant or done takeout in months and we can't be the only ones and nationally the daily case count is as bad as ever and people move around.... So How are you doing Chris?
