I have a matching set of rods again! Yay!

I couldn't help myseld... I had to go back and touch up the heaviest so now the range is 337.74g -337.84g, back to the 0.10g "spec"

Not to be a downer but the rods are coated on the face you grooved. I had a challenge engine loose the coating and the two rods galled each other, removing material and finally reached the bearing. It got ugly after that. I spend some time on the phone with a Pankl engineer to get an explanation. We determined that the excessive RPM we used, (we may or may not have had the limit removed) caused crank flex. That led to pinching the rods at the thrust and excessive pressure "wiped" the coating and they started to gall. All of the rods had some evidence of galling, but the failure was just one pair. Your oil groove may help this. I would make sure the edges have a generous radius.

I just finished a complete rehash of a set of 275 single cam heads. Welded chambers, all new guides and seats with nice radius valve job.
I am pretty happy with the results. I will say, the parent metal is terrible. I is like working with casting made from nasty recycled cans or something. Pits, holes, and just trash in the metal when welded. Terrible stuff these old heads.

I remember the 1st time around with this going round and round on whether the rods needed to go out for re-coat or not and never got a straight answer and finally just decided to let it roll. As I said 1 set of the rods I bough came with the oil slots.....I assumed they were factory as the color matched indicating to me the slots had been there when the engine was running....but they could have been something someone added I suppose. I did debur my grooves well...wish I hadn't cut extras this time around but all are deburred. Still can't understand why the logos switched sided like that but oh well.....

heads....yeah.....I need to get back to the heads......

Boring but progress. I cleaned up the rods, numbered the ones with wrong numbers (way back I bought a set of v8 rods which I used as numbered then filled in with more v8 rods so numbered wrong) , installed the new bearings and torqued. These are now ready to go to the machine shop whenever things reopen to be measured so the crank can be ground to match.

We were definitely in the 10k plus range. There were other determining factors as well that may have led to the over stress of the crank. It was a 355 and those cranks are swiss cheese for sure. To be sure it was fast as hell. It was a different race world back then. i am sure nothing like that happens anymore.
I do know Ferrari gives you the software at the track, and the fuel. There may be some trickery but not like the old days.

Started cleaning up the pistons....looks like the valves were hitting. Bank 1 seems to be more intakes, bank 2 more exhausts but its pretty much everything everywhere.

I'll need to recut the relief pockets and then che k the valves pretty carefully to see if any are bent.
