And on that note I need to cut a few more holes in my drywall to run a few more wires as the theater is up to 12 speakers now....I'm pretty sure no good has ever come from reading, especially not technical articles.

You'll be getting some good use out of that bag of durabond 90 at least :)

I don't know if it was just the door moving around or what but it toom me 6 total coats of mud to get it flat....mentally I'm blaming the durabond.

I found a deal on an onkyo 9.2 receiver...wiring is closing in on ECU

My experience with suround systems is, that simple voice can be difficult to understand until you really turn up the volume.
I have much better sound with two really good stage speakers just left and right of the screen.
I use KS CPA2, which is unfortunately not in production anymore.
E.g. for small money you can try something like JBL Eon 6xx. Xx depends on your room volume. You can even try to rent them for a day or weekend from some PA service or even a band.

If I was going to go that route I'd get these instead

I know basically nothing beyond what I've read...I put sound in the 308 years ago but a coworker picked out the parts for me, I've never even owned a home stereo. After spending way more than I had budgeted I have decided that no good comes from reading

This is the reviver
https://www.onkyousa.com/product/tx-nr797/

9 channel and each has it own cross-over settings, equalizer and +/-12db volume adjust. The main speakers for the 5.1 are all JBL from the same series/set so meant to be used together, studio 570 fronts, 520 center, 530 rear, 550 sub. The 520 center is supposed to be specifically designed for voices and I will be able to boost that channel is needed

The height speakers to make it a 5.1.4 are cheaper polk in wall. We first bought 4 8" Yamaha ceiling speakers because dolby always shows ceiling installs for atmos setup and I 'm sure would have been fine. I decided to switch to the in-walls because I have beams across the ceiling that will interrupt and block things but more importantly I have 3 rows of seating and it just seemed like only the front row would get anything reassembling good height sound with the ceiling setup and in-wall are a susported atoms setup as well as prefered by other 3D sound formats so it just seemed a better choice. To do it though meant I had to go to the smaller 5/14" speakers to fit above the screen and into the rear beam....but they are claimed to work down to 67hz which seemed fine and again I can cross, equalize and volume adjust as needed so I'm hoping for the best and with wire and such I'm at right about $2500 on the $500 budget so one way or the other it has to be finished.

Here's the rear setup. Ideally the rear uppers would point down a bit but the was ruled ugly so they are flat but the tweeters do adjust so they at least point about where they should

The lowers need stands but I want to know what size chairs I'm working around before buying anything. I can't place them as wide as would be ideal for the front row or not as far back as would be needed for the 2nd row and clearly they do nothing helpful for anyone sitting at bar but its what I can do. I figure it will be about like
1st row - 5.1.4
2nd - 3.1.4 but with some side rear presence hopefully
3rd - 3.1.2

Anyway, best I can do. I need to paint the 2 front uppers black as they only come white then get back to building the cabinet. The flooring is at the local shipping depot so it should arrive here sometime this week. We ran a radon test last week, the results will determine the final HVAC setup I'm told....but I think I already know the answer will be the basemen gets a dedicated air-handler somehow. Still lots to do :(

closer....mostly built the cabinet but there is debate about adding dividers or not so its stopped. Moved to the screen which came out pretty nice I think. Its 1x4 poplar with 4 french cleats to mount it to the wall and the picture is much nicer on a real screen. I'm hoping the flooring is here this week....its at the depot so....

What about hiding all the electronics in the closet next to the screen and using an IR repeater so the remotes still work.

Maybe, it is literally a water closet though so a little dangerous for electronics

Yesterday the receiver came and I just couldn't help but hook everything up to see/hear it working....which turned out to be much harder than I imagined but in the end it was working and seemed pretty frikin good...its hard to describe but you real the sound as much as hear it. I had planned to watch a movie in the folding chair last night but I was struggling with a few setup issue until past my bedtime so I will delay any actual work that might make dust all over my new stuff and watch a movie tonight before I re-box most of this until the floor is in.

Right now the only electronic thing to look at is the receiver and honestly with the black on black on black color scheme they only thing to really see is the screen, you don't notice any of it...once the cabinet is black. I did apparently loos track of the sub height measurement ion the design and unless I find something I can change it will not fit under the cabinet once the floor is in :?
