Got started cutting. The profile is there around the top and in the center in the z. Slow going, lots of points to find and transfer....but going.

I have a really good CNC guy that copies my stuff and duplicates it. I own the fixtures and software for the machine. With it I could get my own machine or use another shop if I needed to.
It saves me shop hours and makes for a pretty sweet piece.

I can't leave you alone for a minute. Never use gapless 2nd rings.

ALWAYS use gapless top rings, when available. SpeedTalk has quite a few threads about this. David Vizard says always use gapless top rings.

ST is good for some thing and terrible for others....the gapless or not question seems to fall into the terrible side with it being basically 100% option and mostly the options seem to revolve around cost....like the ST love of MS stuff.

Hard data beyond the manufacture's seems non-existent. I know I used gapless 2nd rings on the H-D and 308 builds and had very good running engines.....but I have no idea if the gapless rings helped anything. My thought here is about being sure oil is controlled as things may get a little loose after re-hone.....whether or not this will help I really don't know.

Across several threads and several builders, including DV, the consensus was that gapless top rings, Napier 2nd rings and conventional 3rd rings was the best combo. The gapless top increased oil life (especially evident on alcohol engines) and reduced PCV gas volume. A gapless top is also SAFER since the two overlapping pieces can each be gapped significantly wider than a conventional ring, making the engine much less sensitive to high thermal loads.

Since the 2nd ring doesn't have much/any pressure sealing function when used with a gapless top, it can be better suited for removing oil (Napier profile), which then lets the actual oil ring get by with a little less tension.

Many of the same posters had tried gapless 2nds with mixed results or minimal improvement and all favored gapless tops. Supposedly when the 2 piece gapless ring was originally invented, the industry didn't have the metallurgy/production techniques to make gapless top rings work, so started with gapless 2nds. Modern gapless top rings are mostly steel (exceptions being some old skool 5/64 rings) instead of cast iron.

I know gapless tops work GREAT in my Northstar. It makes great power and great torque with minimal blowby... Now if they'd only cut the 3rd grooves at 3mm instead of 4mm.

I guess I read it differently and didn't see anything persuasive. I reached to out Total seal asking for a recommendation and any data they base the recommendation on, I'll post whatever comes back if anything does.

Just because I was in the mood to play I opened dynomation and installed the last version....no longer 900hp, 825 in the wave model  (darker) normally use or 850 on the FE (lighter - Filland Empty...simpler model).  Still a lot and we'll soon get to see if its right but I'm sad to not get 900hp graphs anymore.  Sent a note to the developer asking about the craziness of the FE model at 3200, 5000.....this engine seems to really challenge the software and almost always finds issues when he added new features.

If only I had a dyno to see what the engine REALLY makes!  :)
