I think the 17" look better (more balanced) and you can still find some pretty good rubber to go around. In a few years, though...

I agree....but I kind of wonder if its as much the change I made to the ring area inside the bead where the valve stem goes on OEM and the 17" design and doesn't fit on my 18" design. The change reduced the weight but also reduced the amount of silver you see around thew wheel....the race wheels of the day were 3 piece so they had even more silver around the rim and that is what makes them "feel" 80s? Not sure.

Thickness of the ring relative to the sidewall height, maybe?

maybe....or relative to diameter....a bigger wheel your eye expects a bigger ring perhaps. Not sure.
