Post subject:  308 rear wheel carrier redo

A few days ago Sean D emailed me that he broke a rear stub shaft at an AX. I know of at least 1 other person who broke one in the heat of battle....or at least hot laps at the track. When I first got my 308 and started talking blower I was warned about breaking axles so this is a well known issue. I think what's changed a bit in recent years is the 308 is a collector car so not many driven hard but the ones that still are now have DOT tire options that are as or more sticky then slicks were just a few years back bringing the race only axle issue to the street car world.

Time to fix it.

The plan that is shaping up is to take a C7 vette bearing assembly

Buy an adapter to the 308's 930 style CVs

This whole assembly is shorter than 308....longer axles are available
https://swayaway.com/product/axle-set-p ... 28-spline/

and an wheel adapter may be, as in probably is, required.

Then somehow it needs to be assembled to the 308 carrier of a new carrier built.

let to me this will involve cutting and welding but the verdict is still out. Sean will have parts in hand tomorrow probably which will make visualizing what needs to happen easier. I'll probably order a matching set in short order.

Let the fun begin!

Figuring this out would be a real service to the 308 community.

I am running my 308 in the Virginia City Hill Climb with modern sticky tires later this year and my stub axles scare me.

Driveshaft shop makes those too: https://www.driveshaftshop.com/domestic ... 30-cv-2201

A fabrication from laser cut steel plates could be designed strong enough, yet stay pretty light, move the shocks inboard, etc.

Also, C5 & C6 Corvettes have a monolithic drum-in-hat parking brake that would be too easy to install with a Corvette bearing.

Great minds run in the gutter, I guess.

I was already working on exactly that for my Fiero.

Also adapting the Mitsubishi EVO VII parking brake to help keep rotor costs affordable

http://www.realfierotech.com/viewtopic. ... 15#p157815

Using that P-Brake lets me use a hat with the 8x7.62 rotor bolt circle, which lets me use an $85 Wilwood rotor that's still 12.19x1.25... not the hugest, but not bad.

I"m not sold on the steel path...not because it isn't a fine option but its just hard to remove an alum part and replace with a steel one. Here are some of his pics

I guess empi makes the stub axles and axles pretty cheap. The stub axles fit the z06 hubs but are designed for S10, so about a .200" spacer is need to get the nut to tighten right.

I think I'd fab it in ALum....grind it a lot and make it look cast :)

I guess that's just a fit-check prototype, as I don't see anything solid enough to mount brakes to.

I don't think I'd run it without bringing the entire part back to T6 after welding.

Which axles and stub axles are you referring to?

Years ago I saw an EMPI paper catalog that had PNs for axle bars and CV joints as well as boots and clamps. The current web catalog is junk by comparison.

Corvette is 5x120.65 with 12mm studs, while 308 is 5x108 with 14mm bolts. Either an adapter will be needed, or just make your carbon fiber wheels either dual pattern or specific pattern if you're keeping the Ferrari front hubs & spindles.

Heck, the stock wheels fit all four corners, but the stock hubs have different wheel pilot diameters front and rear. Italians.

You could build a welded aluminum fabrication that you then re-solutionize and age to T6
