The big green thing is the welder, it has a 400A max ouptut and I think has a 100% duty cycle.

Wow. In contrast, my little Lincoln 140HD does 140 amps ... at 20% duty cycle.

I lied ....so I guess I'm qualified to be president!

I just looked up my welder and its only 60% @300A

The reason I looked it up is because I just learned something important about wiring welders...you get to use smaller wire than normal. There is a special section of the code (630.11) that gives you a multiplier based on the duty cycle to apply to the load the wire sees. So for me I take 112A x 0.78=87.4 and the 4g I'm using good and not even cheating. The breaker can be up to 200% the wire rating. I need to look a bit closer at my weld as it might have capacitors in it that drop the max draw to 86A which would let me run a 6g....who knew?

Found the owner's manual for my welder and it says 3g wite and a 150A time delay fuse......so I'm back to my wire being undersize, oh well....

Thanks....and I think except for some cleaning up it done....2 hours turned into all day but the shelves are built and have 2 coats of paint.

I shouldn't be but I'm amazed at how much brighter the shop it now that everything is painted.....kind of wish I'd painted the old shop.
