Love the shop. I dream of something like that one day. We shall see. My wife keeps looking for something with a shop or land. At least she is on board. Love that woman.

Thanks...its getting there. Today I picked up the spring hardware for the other 2 doors and a new spring for door 1...the pair of springs they gave me worked but were much to stiff so preloaded to the point the door wanted to self open at the bottom it would fall on your head up top. They also gave me bad advice on cable length so the door was on the highlift section of the wheels for about 4ft but I only have 2ft for high lift. So new cables for door 1 too.

The springs they gave me today were close to what I calculated so I said ok.....he had no idea how I got the 1st set be it had no interest in a credit of any kind. The doors work WAY better now but I'm pretty sure my numbers would have made them perfect.....the springs are a little soft now it seems. Not bad at all.....so I know I should be happy.....but I really want to cut about 3 inches off the springs to make them 10% stiffer......someday maybe.

Also I noticed when I got home they are a little less critical of tolerance than I am and there it about 1.5 inch difference longest to shortest.....I need a new door parts place.

I really want to cut those springs....I'll probably call them Monday.....I think there must be a tool to remove/install the ends.

I find myself making that comment a lot... "How did they let this leave the factory?"

No factory, they get the spring in long lengths and custom cut.....so these made like that special for me :)

So talked to the door guys and got some numbers from him. They use IPPT = Inch Pounds Per Turn

If this was a normal 7ft lift with normal 4"OD drums (2inch radius)he would give me a spring with 38.73 IPPT and suggest 7.64 turns of load = 38.73x7.64/2 = 147.9 lbs. The manufacturer says my door weighs 130lbs....maybe they add 20lbs for hardware...not sure. When the door is full up that leaves 0.64 turns or 12.4 lbs force. and with the door 2ft from the top (where my high light door stops it has 51lbs. OK.

For my high lift door they want 33.37 IPPT and 9.5 turns = 158.5 with the door down...and yet my door is self closing with 10 turns load, the math changes a bit doe to the taper pulley so maybe best to stay on the round pulley motion. full up its got 41.7 by design and 50 with the extra 1/2 turn I gave it...which seems to match and yet it self opens. hmmmmm......a little quick math says if the full door is 150 (130+20 hw) then 2/7 is 43.....really close and yet the door goes up.

I think the right number of turns is 8.75 or maybe 9. With the taper 7ft travel is about 8.75 turns just watching it then self close at the bottom is better than self open so 9. right now 10 is low if anything....so at least a 10% stiffer spring...but I think the cones need to be accounted for since that section of the spring doesn't move.....so a 35" spring (which I really need to confirm knowing they are not very accurate) , minus 3" for 2 cones - 32X.9 = 28.8+3=31.8. No longer. Maybe as short as 30.5 if I trust they could get the standard setup right. I need to find an online calculator and check everything.

edit = the online calculator for a standard door spits out a .243 wire x 30.5" long. so exactly what the place I called spec'd for a standard door. I need to confirm the door weight, the number I have, 130lb, I got from by calling the manufacture but it seems like time to actually weigh the door.

With the amount of spring I cut off the fatigue life is probably down to about 5000 cycles now that I really look at things. Normally they say 10k is the min spec.....but it is just a shop.......

The springs could stand to be just a tad stiffer but I'm not cutting anymore because of fatigue. If I ever have them apart again I'll probably shorten the cables about 6" too to get the very bottom further onto the taper so it will tolerate more spring in the mid section and still sit on the bottom seal well but for now they are way better than the doors on my house so good enough. They also don't weigh the the 130lb the manufacture told me...they weight 149 which might make this whole thing not completely the door places fault as I'm sure they would have given me stiffer springs with this heavier number....but the math says the one they speced come out at about 150lbs so that's confusing, I assumed they added 20lb for hardware....who knows I guess.

Sunday i decided to install the top door seals....and that wasted my whole day. the 8x7 door are exactly 8 wide but more like 7'1" tall. The height is a problem of sorts in that I made the opening 7...stucco took maybe 1/2" then the molding sits down another 1/2" then the seal thing an inch....and lays on the window frame or just above it and acts as a ratchet lock against the window frame. This lead me to conclude I should move all the moldings out away from the door a bit and that helped a lot.....but now that the side molding were tight for months they taken a bit of a set and don't really seal at all and its noticeably colder near the doors than it was......if its not 1 thing its another.....

Gutter guys are supposed to be coming today, hopefully that goes better than the doors.
