I'd forgotten just how much I hate shopping for used cars and the world where most everything that seems like a great deal is at dealer that just plain lies about the price in the ad.  I was watching TV and an ad for cargurus was on, went to the website and sorted by price, the first dozen or so cars are scams from the same places I saw when I was shopping for the bmw...we advertise the "we finance price, let me get you the cash price" or "that's the export price with us acting as broker, let me get you the domestic price"  just bizarre lies to sneak around bait and switch laws.  Its a strange world when ebay seems the safest place to shop because they have to sell for the price they list.......although even then I almost made an offer on a car that in person turned out to look like it had been through some kind of sand storm, only car on the lot that wasn't washed, really dusty....but I literally see them washing other cars that are much cleaner....hmmmmm......wipe the dust away and even the glass has no gloss, the car was basically totaled and certainly not priced accordingly.  This is why my last 2 purchases ended up R title cars....the guys were honest and a pleasure to deal with.  Rant over.

edit: Oh, and I found the new ferrari cylinders in the shop yesterday evening while getting tools for basement work, Lana "forgot" to tell me they'd arrive and she put them in the shop...in the corner..... behind the lathe.....i suspect to keep me focused on "more important" things.

We're kind of on lockdown and I'm out of basement material and it's raining so no yard work....to the shop!

I decided to see what I need to do to make the 2 new rods part of the set so I weighed everything....the one is pretty light with the small end already about a gram under where I finished the others and the total weight about 1/2 gram over....and while I don't remember doing it it looks like I added oil grooves to the the others so I'll need to do that and probably make this new rod the lightest un every way in the prosess :(

About 10g to come off the other so that one will be easy to deal with.

I just ordered titanium piston pins for my Northstar.

https://www.pppcenter.com/pinprices.html

0.866 x 2.500 x 0.206 wall drops me from a 112 gram steel pin to a 76 gram Ti pin, which is significant, especially since I can then turn more metal off the counterweights.

The ferrari pins for these rods are 20mm (.787)OD so pretty light. The pins JE sent are 2.25" long and weigh 83g. The 308 pins were 18.5mm....not sure when they went up to 20mm....348 or or maybe when Ti rods came in with the 355?

So this morning I setup the mill and cut the grooves which went smoothly until during debuting I noticed they were both were cut on the wrong side.

On the rods I have there are 2 different "pankl" logos and on all 10 it's on the outside of the rod and that is how I setup the new rods, which also are 1 of each logo style.....but on both the new rods the bearing retaining notches are cut opposite the 10 I had putting the log on the inside.....clearly I was looking at the wrong thing when I was setting up. So the newrods now have 6 grooves.

I can't think of any reason the extra grooves on the outside will hurt anything....maybe a little more oil flow on this pair? Maybe I'll separate then to not be a pair to minimize that? I think it will be fine... back to balancing I guess.

Grinding rods sucks....I'd forgotten just that. Looking back it was Oct 2008 when I did it last time. That 1 rod (new #5) was a quite light rod with a relatively heavy cap so once the cap was matched to the others the rod overall lightest by 2g. Now, Ferrari matches the sets in 4g groups and there is no end to end spec that I know of so really it was well within spec and good enough ....but last time I think I matched the total within 0.1 but caps and big ends were only within 2g so WAY out of that spec. I spent quite a bit of time balancing everything thinking the whole point of a V12 is to make gobs of power while being freakinshly smooth and that still seems like the right answer. So far the caps, big ends, small ends are all matching within 1g and the total weight within 0.2g so a little better overall this time I think.

The new rod 8 was 12g heavy overall, 3g on the caps, 9 on the rod....right now the cap is done and the rod is sitting at 3.5 heavy so another 15-20 minutes to finish it up the 2g each off the last 4....hopefully finished tomorrow. Still kind of annoyed with myself over the oils grooves...but....
