you know if you runs evans then you wouldn't have any coolant system pressure to deal with. And if you get a leak not only will it still run it'll smoke like a son of a bitch! Don't ask how I know

There's a thought then!

It will still have pressure though. Yes the tank is 0-2psi, but on decel it can still pull 15-20inHG or so maybe 10psi and pumping the coolant means pressure...maybe another 10psi in the heads.

Years ago I designed a fuel cell and just couldn't get it stop leaking coolant which was paratherm which is like evans I believe. Anyway this thing ran at 160C and smoked like a mother with the coolant leaking...the "solution" I came up with was pulling a vacuum 2 psi at the cell itself, leak fixed!, run the system goal met! :)

pumping pressure... haven't measured that myself. Evans is mostly a-propylene glycol, viscosity charts and head losses are easy enough to look up as it's used extensively in chill lines and coolant lines in food service, industrial & commercial among many many other things.

Thinking a bit here, the high side low side should result in low system pressure if and this is the big if, pump efficiency is good and all water and air is out. Water will boil off but increase pressure as it expands. Oh and the stuff is nutty expensive!

Maybe once you have resolved the leaks, you could look at pressurising water at up to 100 degree C somehow in your heads before assembly.

This would give you the first indication of what is going to happen with temperature and expansion, etc.

BTW this tester you built is proving worth it's weight in gold!

ideally you'd also want the heads at temp too, that requires a big oven.. Given the expansion rates of the materials I don't think it'll be a problem when hot, heck if anything the leaking would stop depending on the 'gap' of the hole. Steels and aluminum have different expansion rates and that is where temps can most certainly come into play, cast iron block & aluminum heads for example, iron liners in aluminum blocks, etc..

All this expansion talk has me recalling calculating the expansion of the cylinder head with the exhaust and intake valves to insure that at temp they were not too close to the piston, changing the piston to deck height, CR etc.. and valves changed the clearances and getting that wrong is expensive! Not fond of the clackity clack noises

Surely the hot water would heat the head(s) ...

I know, I know.......just one thing after another this spring/summer

I did work a couple hours Friday . So the 1 head looks like 3 leaks by guides and 1 by a seat but about the time I got the seat knocked out Lana and the kids got some and that was that. I still hope to get some time today....but right now I'm supposed to be making waffles.
