That's what you get for not backing the pipes up to the doorway BEFORE you tried to start it! :P

However, GREAT news otherwise! It's finally pretty close to actually turning fuel into noise!

It is almost amazing how smoke travels.....Lana is SOOOOO mad at me.

Sounds a lot like good progress, until this last post. Keep up the good work!!!.
It was a very real fire. The floor has a 3 foot by 12-15 foot scorch behind the 1-6 exhaust pipe......I'll bet it was at least 1/2 gallon of gas that sprayed out and caught fire. The ceiling is black, AC ducts hanging because the plastic straps burned off so the smoke was sucked in and pumped everywhere. Lana will have me cleaning and probably painting for weeks and I'm sure there will and outright ban on engines running in the basement going forward which means wheels on and car pushed out before there can be another attempt....and its january so it's frikin cold out.

This is the project from hell.
This is almost done.

Congrats.

It is not; it is one of the most complex, ambitious and courageous projects around. Mere mortals cannot attempt what you are doing.

If its driving you that nuts, take a break from it. It will be fun again sooner or later. I like the Churchill quote though. ... and every project does indeed seem to take an unplanned detour through Hell.

I guess what I mean is that while I KNOW there is a finite number of things that can possibly go wrong and fixing them one by one will get me to the end it just seems that way more things have gone wrong, particular near the end than I would expect.... Months to get off the shelf valves? A pinched wire...fine. But a pitched wire that leads to liters of fuel hiding in the muffler just waiting to burn the house down? crazy. Now I won't be able to touch the car until Lana releases me from cleanup duty.....a month at least I'd think which is near torture knowing its running and just needs a little tuning to run right.

The way the cold air returns are built in my HVAC they leak badly which means basement air in the house......I think I need to start by fixing that and I may just get early release.

I snuck to the shop for a few minutes and looked at a few plugs.....#6 looked gas fowled, #5 boarderline gas fowled but 1-4 &12 looked lean which is what I expected as I was adding fuel to get it to run. Still need to peak at 7-11 and decide the next step. It's not uncommon to find a mix after first fire so I'll replace 5&6 and any others that looks similar and we'll be ready to try again.....when I'm free.

I got it running! Not on all cylinders but running!

I also set the house on fire. I guess the muffler has filled with fuel and when the engine started it blowout on the floor and gas sure does burn good! It doesn't seem too bad......the car is not damaged.

Clearly I should not have asked what else can go wrong.........oh and neither of the 2 extinguishers I set out would spray. By dumb luck Lana washed her car and just left the house laying in front of the basement door and there's a spigot right outside and I got the fire out.

WTF!

Edit - here's a pic....you can kind of see the car in there is you squint a bit

Having a second set of eyes is always best, no question about that.

It's also pretty stupid to be test running engines in the basement.

So it's double stupid to be test running an engine in the basement alone.

Last night Lana and I decided the mess is just too big to trackle alone and we called the insurance company. I also had my first real look at the car....the paint on the back panel is pretty bad, I need to look at the light in day light to be sure they are ok.

I need to have a look at the rest of the plugs and replace the fouled ones.....but mostly I need to get the wheels on. This part of the project I really didn't think through very well. The door is just barely big enough to get the car through so it would need to be all the way out to mess with anything and still be able to get out the door if anyhting goes wrong...like say a fire. The landing in front of the dorr is 8'x8' so the car would be on the grass which is really mud or soon to be snow/ice this time of year. I need to think about this and maybe move it up to the real garage if I want to focus on the enigne running....

When it fired the VE was set to 180% which confuses me..... I didn't didn't get a chance to log anything or really even look at the screen as I like to have my eyes on the engine as it first comes alive (but couldn't see the floor behind it :( ) and didn't get a chance to check the pipes for heat to know for sure which were firing and which weren't as I normally would....so really I need a do-over now before I know what to work on. That 180 VE number could mean it just hates to be cold or could indicate I have a problem in my ECU math somewhere or both.....I need to get the wheels on, car out and try again with the log on.

The 180% VE could mean a lot of things
- Incorrect injector data
- Its cold
- Some adder is not working correctly
- ???
