On a 308 you can't easily oring the coolant because there is no block between the cylinders. You need to use a long oring that at least goes around the all the cylinders. The copper seals the combustion chamber well and drag guys who run a dry block just love them. If you are running coolant though, sealing the water is a challenge and everyone I found who was successful used sealant of some type on the copper.

First thing tonight was to weld shut the open ends of the oil holes I drilled last night. Then the moment of truth, set the heads on the block and see what I've got.

Much to my delight the alignment pins lined-up as planned and the heads dropped right on into their official location. I still need to add oil return bosses to the heads to match what I did on the block, but that should be pretty straight forward.

Next came a quick look at the timing cover situation…..and it looks like I’ve got a wee bit of work ahead of me. Tomorrow.

In the pictures I found of the gasket sets, it sure looked like they came with copper rings, but I think the sets are pretty universal, use what you needs I guess. But I didn't want to have to buy 3 complete gasket sets at $14.95 each so I kept looking and found a place that listed the ring separate...I hope I orded the right parts.

Dave,
I sure appreciate the loner cylinder! Don’t worry about getting it right out though, it looks like I’ll tied up on the timing cover for a day or 2……

I went and measured the heads when you mentioned flipping them before. They are very symmetrical, so the only thing flipping then would do is make a bit more work with the cams among other things.

As for doing a “Newman”, Paul is doing a beautiful job on his car and as much as I would love for mine to look even ½ as good, that is a skill set I simply do not have. I’m going to have to live with a driver. I keep saying I'm going to get it painted when the engine is done, but I keep end up starting a new engine every time the engine is done....maybe after this one

It's turning into quite the frankenferrari:

Starts as a US 308QV then slowly......
Euro rear bumper
GTO front valance
Euro GTO front bumper
Euro GTO front turn signals
308 replica grill to fit the GTO valance
348 seats (I think they are going to go)
550 wheels
Porsche cayenne 6 piston front calipers (oh the shame)
Porsch 944 front caliper on the rear (oh, even more shame)
chevy radiator (oh, that's just wrong)
400i lower end
TR heads
348 liners
Suzuki throttlebodies

At least there are no honda parts on it :)

But you won't get to see all the forged…..I mean documents showing it to be a factory original 308 with the ultra rare V12 308 option

I didn't have much time tonight. Here's a picture of the situation with the head I decided to start with....some metal needs to come off. I started setting up and had to call it a night, I'll make some chips tomorrow.
