Here you go.

Just you know...the big hammers were just out of site ;)

and the bench was basically clean when I got into the shop at 7am yesterday, but by 6pm when I FINALLY had the cover on and everything looking right...well I'd gotten out a lot of tools in the 11 hours it took.

notice on the chair the chunk of extra timing chain, the TR heads just aren't the same as 400i heads :)

Also notice the 3/4" ratchet...I love that thing! you can see the 1/2" and 3/8" sitting on the bench looking like toys in the background

A quick walk down memory lane on the timing cover....it's come a long way.

:)

Judging by the size of the various hammers, you are a master engineer mechanic.

It really has come a long way.....along with the distinction that "here is a one off"

That engine really looks big.

As an aside and really of no consequence to the build will you be spraying the cylinder head covers red or will you leave them in ally?

It sure has.....I had no idea what I was getting myself into on this one.

The how to finish it question had been around a long time but it was so far from finished it never really mattered :?

What I used to do as standard practice on anything I welded was a quick clean up and wrinkly paint to hide any imperfections and call it done as you saw in the supercharger thread:

viewtopic.php?f=2&t=29

That was the original plan on this this built too. Then it struck my that red timing cover, cam covers and airbox would be way too much red. I also wanted to try to keep an OEM look (gemello cattivo  ) thing going and a QV has satin cam and timing covers with red air box so then that was the plan.....but these are TR heads so maybe red cam covers with satin timing and air box......but this isn't a TR it's a QV......but the air box is now so big maybe it would still be too much red......I decided to put it all together satin which is probably too much aluminum and see what I have and go from there once I see it in the car with everything around it.

So ally for now.

Ally with black accessories also works very well.

I think you may well be correct is saying that the covers and filter in red may be too much red.

It certainly is worth pondering upon as that will really be the cherry on the cake so to speak.

you're right......I'd hate to come this far just to screw up the colors! :)

I think get it in the car and maybe play in photoshop to see what I like.

Finally something went easy!

I bought a 9" degree wheel and it worked out nice. Just a quick little adapter to center it, egg out one of the hole a little and it bolted on so the TCD indicator points to TDC on the degree wheel. I'll still check and adjust if needed but on to cam timing!

Mark when you become more proficient at engines and engineering you will require a bigger hammer as the one you are currently using is for amateur engine builders :)

Cams are timed.

the way I do it is I bolt a spacer to the head, and my dial indicator mounts to that. Then I use a bent it that reaches over to the bucket. The factory spec call fo the lash to be set to zero and blah, blah.....that way sucks. I just leave the lash where it is and read the .050" lift timing and calculate the lobe center from that.

i was looking for 102 intake, 110 exhaust because that is what the sim likes best. The cam grinder said 108/108. I'm thinkint the "spec" wants to be 102-104 intake 108-110 exhaust. What I ended up with on both heads is 103/109...good enough. I think by jumping the sprockets 1 tooth I could have gotten them closer but that is quite a bother and I really don't know where real world perfect is anyway.

By the time you get to the 7-12 exhaust (the last on the chain it's really jumpy...you have to get the engine turning and keep it turning until you are in exactly the right spot....try to move it just s little and the crank turn with no cam motion then the valve jumps 15-20 thousands. It took a little practice.
