In toward the trans for this gear. All 3 are contained in the bellhousing casing with the drop gear cover so no thrust loads will leaving that casing in the new design.

If the coupling can take the thrust, then the transmission input shaft bearings and case geometry are already set up to deal with that load. Is it the same direction as the shifted gear mesh or opposite?
Using the transmission's capability to take axial loads makes your design job simpler.

I slept on that and I think the answer is no, it doesn't help because my answer about which direct the helical reaction was incomplete. Under acceleration the force is toward the trans, but on decel its away from the trans. A pair of tapered roller bearings still seems the easiest i think.

Older son showed a little interest so I spent some time on little things. We got the dash panel on passenger side back in place correctly which made me notice the door. Since I got the car the passenger door has been quite stiff but I don't use that door so no real issue .....but yesterday I had a look at it after my younger son struggled with it a bit on his ride. Zero luck getting grease into the grease fittings so i hosed it down with penetrating oil and will do that a few more times before I accept reality and rebuild the hinges

My data logs show no reading for rear axle speed and odd and not matching reading for front wheel speeds. This all needs to be working right to do traction control so that needs to be looked at.

True, the new shaft would need to be attached to the OE shaft somehow to react axial load from overrun torque.

More very important work today. I shortened and relocated the chute handle on the snowblower so it doesn't smash into my thigh when I'm snowblower or walking past. .. and it only took 17 years for this to make the top of the list


Then I decided I'd placed the gemellocattivo too low and corrected that as well as doing the clear coat on the 308.
