Yesterday afternoon I worked pretty slow spending my time on test fits and measuring just to be sure. I made a couple minor tweaks to gear protrusions be everything looked pretty good I think and the gears all fit.

Then I got started on the cover machining. . i did so general clean-up then set everything back up in the mill to locate the bearing. I decided that the best way to know for sure that the outer bearing line up with the inner bearing was to indicate the inner then put the cover on and pop a hole in it at the location. Next I'll flip the cover over the indicate in the hole and have the exact right spot. When I'm all done I'll close the holes using thread in plugs or more likely just weld them shut.

The case cleaned up nicely.

Maybe a threaded plug in terms of looks and weld in terms of ease.

I'm going to give the cover a grind and sand when I'm done welding/machining so I think I can weld in the holes and you'll never know they were there. I hesitate on the threaded plug mainly because I only left the outer surface 1/8" thick so a pipe thread plug will probably be a problem and I'd need some type of flange plug.....and welding is fast :)

The no part is if you are at WOT you can't maintain constant power....but you want to. What the ECU see is the MAP reading dropping which it reads as decreasing load and goes to the fuel/spark for the lighter load. If you tuned your whole map for the same mixture its no problem but normally at lower loads a leaner mixture is used because at lower loads (part throttle at sea level) you aren't trying to make all the power you possibly can. So as you go up the hill you get the mixture gets a bit leaner and you give away some hp. This can be a pretty big problem is the engine only pulls a few inches of vacuum at best anyway because now WOT could get you basically idle timing and mixture. WRONG!

EASY SOLUTION.

Move to Santa Fe. It's 7,000' here.

and NEVER leave or you have the opposite problem with the ECU thinking everything is WOT ;)

Bored the bearing holes
Bored the top the make room for the bigger gear
Welded the witness holes
Gave the whole thing a grind and sand.....what a suck job that was.

I think the cover is done.

Last night as I was thinking about how cool it's going to be once the bell housing and drop gears go on because that means the power train is done and ready to install it occurred to me that I can't assemble the bellhousing until I figure out what to do with the hydraulic throw out bearing lines.

Looking at the date on the photo I mounted the throwout back in 2008 so I've known since then that I'd need feed and bleed lines.....but now I actually NEED them. The bearing is AN-3, I'll need bulkhead fitting to move the connections to the outside of the bellhousing and line inside the bellhousing to connect....I need to stop what I'm doing and get some parts on order if I want ot have any chance of assembling anything next weekend.

It just takes time and I'm on a deadline...SPRING! :)

Looking at it tonight I decided it will fine if I just make a flex line and run it out the vent hole to a P-clamp. Parts ordered. i still need to sort out the pedal/master cylinder but I'll deal with that when I'm up there working on the brake and gas pedal stuff since it doesn't affect me assembling the engine.

I also had to drill an oil feeds int eh idler bearing bosses. So out with the plugs, drill, new plugs in.

After years of following this project, the birth of your children, balancing Lana's wants with your wants, garden and other home projects you disappeared? Well a little sleuthing and here you are with much progress. This goes far beyond any describable craftsmanship.
Even our smallest projects become complicated. I tried to upload a picture, but wanting to park my 308 and 550 in the same space with a nice parking lift turned into a brain and muscle tease. Lift was easy...but now relocate opener, raise garage door to more acceptable height when open, and figure out how working alone to stretch those damn springs...

I'd rather read and view your pictures, thank you for the trilogy as we get into book 3.

Angelo
